Jerez de la Frontera

Jerez de la Frontera is a city of the Cádiz province in Andalusia in southwestern Spain, which is located between the sea and the mountains. Jerez is the largest city in the province with population of more than 200,000 inhabitants. In economic aspect it is the most ceveloped city of the Cádiz province. Jerez de la Frontera also is a suitable area for agriculture. There are located many cattle ranches and are conducted horse-breeding operations.

During the Muslim occupation of Iberia it was called Xerez or Xeres. Frontera itself means the location on the border between the Moorish and Christian Spain of that period. Here is also produced a fortified wine, sherry, which is another version of the city’s name.

Jerez is known worldwide as the capital of sherry wine, horses and flamenco. Jerez is also a home of flamenco and is famous with the Andalusian Centre of Flamenco. There is located the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, which can compete with the world-famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna. The symbols of the city are paella and corrida, an integral part of another Spanish region of Valencia.

In addition to this Jerez de la Frontera has two major museums the Jerez Archaeological Museum and the Atalaya Watch Museum ("the Palace of Time"). Tourists will also be interested to visit the Palace of Bertemati and the Monastery of la Cartuja.

Jerez de la Frontera is also quite a big cultural center in the province. From the old times the historical part of Jerez, which was founded in meddle ages has been called "the Artistic Historic Complex". There are annually held the Easter week celebrations that attract a lot of tourists from all regions and its famous Horse Fair (Feria del Caballo), which is popular not only in Spain, but also all over the world.
